Coffee Beverage and Drinks Guide

Confused about the different coffee beverage names? Do you know the difference between a cappuccino and a latteccino? When did coffee become so complicated?

Here’s a guide to coffee drinks and beverages that will help you sort out a frappuccino from a latte. Next time it’s your turn to order in the coffee shop, you can impress your friends and co-workers with your extensive knowledge of Americas favorite beverage.

Cafe Americano: This is a light espresso or strong coffee, depending on how you want to look at it. It’s made from equal parts espresso and boiling water.

Cafe au lait: This is a French beverage (like you couldn’t tell that from the name) made from equal parts brewed coffee and steamed milk.

Cafe breve: Espresso with half and half – the same as a latte but with the cream instead of the milk.

Cafe doppio: Double shot expresso combined with 1 shot hot water

Cafe frappuccino: This beverage is more like a milk shake and is amixture of iced coffee, milk and different flavored syrups to suit the drinkers taste.

Cafe latte: Espresso and steamed milk served in a 6 oz cup which can be topped with foam. The usual serving is 1.5 ounces of espresso and 4.5 ounces steamed milk.

Cafe latte macchiato: Want some espresso in your hot milk? Then order this because that’s what it is – a teaspoon of espresso added to hot milk.

Cafe Latteccino: To make his beverage start off with espresso and then add in 2 parts steamed milk and 1 part foam.

Cafe macchiato: Not to be confused with the café latte macchiato, this drink is served in a tiny cup and consists of 1.5 ounces espresso which is then topped with a smidge of foam.

Cafe mocha: This is just a fancy name for a latte with chocolate. It’s espresso combined with chocolate syrup and steamed milk. Some places like to top it off with whipped cream.

Cappuccino: A popular coffee based beverage, this drink is basically espresso with plenty of foamed milk and a little bit of steamed milk.

Mocha Cappuccino: Espresso with foamed milk and chocolate.

Of course, everyone loves coffee drinks and there’s a ton of flavored syrups that can be added to each drink to make an infinite amount of flavored beverages. Some of the more tasty ones I’ve seen include:

  • White Mocha Latte - espresso, steamed milk, white chocolate
  • Carmel Latte - espresso, steamed milk, caramel
  • Almond Joy Latte - espresso, coconut milk, chocolate, almond
  • Mint Latte - espresso, steamed milk, mint
  • Black Forest Latte - espresso, steamed milk, choclate cherry syrup
