Coffee Terms

Want to be a coffee connoisseur? Then here’s some common coffee terms that you can use to impress your friends with your vast knowledge of everything about coffee!

Acidity
Acidity gives coffee it’s “snap”. IT has a brisk quality, not to be confused with a sour taste. Mexican coffees often have an acidy taste. This is not undesirable.

Americano
(or Café Americano) This term defines a drink that is equal parts espresso and hot water.

Arabica
Gourmet Coffee that has a rich flavor – Coffee Arabica is the name given to the coffee tree.

Aroma
The fragrance of brewed coffee which ranges from herby to fruity. Not the smell of the grounds, but the smell of the brewed coffee.

Aromatic
When coffee connoisseurs use this term, they are talking about a coffee whose aroma is characteristic of it’s origin.

Barista
This is what you call a person who makes coffee drinks for a living.

Bitter
A term used to describe the taste of a coffee and is not necessarily negative as some coffee like dark Roasts are meant to be bitter.

Blend
Refers to a mixture of more than 1 type of coffee.

Body
Describes the feeling of the coffee in your mouth. Typical terms to describe body are: heavy, rich, light.

Bouquet
Like with wine, the bouquet refers to the fragrance, aroma and aftertaste of the coffee.

Briny
A term used to describe overbrewed coffee that has a somewhat salty feel to it.

Crema
The foam on a shot of espresso. It helps to keep the aromatic flavors of the coffee in in the cup.

Cupping
A term used by coffee connoisseurs that refers to tasting coffee.

Delicate
A term used to describe the taste of a coffee.

Demitasse
A small sized cup that is used to serve espresso drinks. It is french for “half cup”.

Earthy
A term used to describe the taste of a coffee – somewhat on the spicy side like Indonesian coffees.

Espresso
A method of brewing coffee invented in Italy during the early 1900’s.

French Press
A device which makes coffee by steeping ground coffee in water.

French Roast
Dark roasted coffee has a bittersweet taste.

Froth or Foam
Milk that has been aerated with steam to make if frothy or foamy – used in cappuccino and espresso drinks.

Fruity
A term used to describe the taste of coffee.

Hard Bean
Coffee that is grown at high altitudes.

Organic
Coffee grown without fertilizers or pesticides. Costs more but better for you.

Peaberry
A coffee cherry with only 1 bean

Ristretto
A very strong espresso drink.

Robusta
Coffee that has a lot of caffeine and tastes rather bitter.

Soft Bean
Coffee grown at low altitudes

Stale
Coffee gets stales when exposed to oxygen for too long.

Tone
This term refers to the color of the coffee

Winy
Some coffee has a flavor kind of like red wine. It is called winy.
