Cooking Prime Rib To Perfection

Cooking prime rib properly is essential in order to get the most taste from the meat. Luckily learning how to cook prime rib is easy! You just need to know how to follow simple instructions and buy a good meat thermometer.

Allow about 1 pound of prime rib per person. Do not rub salt onto the meat as this will dry it out. You can roast potatoes and carrots along side the meat in the pan.

How To Cook Prime Rib

Don't get over anxious when cooking prime rib as too high a heat will dry the meat out. It is best to cook at a moderate temperature of 325 degrees. This will keep the meat moist and you will get a more even cooking throughout the piece.

One of the best tools in learning how to cook prime rip is a meat thermometer. If you want your roast done to perfection, you need to be able to read the internal temperature of the beef. You should use an instant read thermometer to determine the temperature of the meat by placing the tip into the center of the roast. After reading the temperature remove the thermometer and either continue cooking prime rib, or remove it from the oven if it is done. Keep checking in this manner until the roast reaches the desired temperature.

The key in how to cook prime rib to perfection is knowing when to take it out of the oven. Since people prefer it cooked to different levels, here's some guidelines to get that perfect roast.

  • Rare - cook to 120 degrees in the middle of the roast - don't go any lower than this! This will be about 12 minutes per pound
  • Medium Rare - Thermometer should read 130 degrees in center of roast. This will take about 15 minutes per pound
  • Medium - Thermometer should read 140 degrees. This will take about 18 minutes per pound

Please note that there may still be bacteria present in rare and medium rare pieces of meat. If you want to be on the safe side, don't take your roast out of the oven until it read 140 or over in the center of the roast.

After smelling cooking prime rib all day you will probably be anxious to carve it right up and start eating, but you should let it sit for 20 minutes or so after you take it out of the oven. This is a good time to wash up all the dishes you have dirtied from an afternoon of preparing the dinner meal. You’ll be that much farther ahead in the clean up and it will make the wait go by faster!
